After Laura Kilgus’ nephew, Tommy, was born with Down Syndrome five years ago, the Rhode Island-based photographer reached out to the Down Syndrome Society of RI (DSSRI) to offer complimentary mini-shoots to families of their organization.
The result is an amazing photo series of children with Down Syndrome having fun.
«I hoped this photo gallery would be special for the children and all of the families of the DSSRI,» Kilgus said to A Plus.»Seeing everyone react to their photos was priceless. Their happiness was so contagious, a beautiful moment to witness.»
Down syndrome occurs in one of 691 births, or 6,000 births per year in the U.S., as a result of the presence of an extra chromosome 21 at conception. Although individuals with Down syndrome tend to experience some health problems throughout their lives, recent medical advances have increased their life expectancy.
